Microsoft has officially rolled out the general availability of custom engine agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot—marking a major step forward in workplace AI integration. This means organizations can now seamlessly bring their own AI agents into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, whether built with Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, Visual Studio, or other platforms.
With this capability, businesses can create and deploy AI agents that align precisely with their internal processes and data environments. These agents can:
- Use custom workflows, fine-tuned models, and external APIs to automate complex business tasks.
- Integrate with existing systems, orchestrators, and tools to extend beyond native Copilot functionalities.
- Run long tasks in the background and provide proactive alerts, helping users stay productive.
Developers have complete control over how agents behave, interact with users, and access organizational data—ensuring compliance with security and regulatory standards.
To speed up development, Microsoft has also introduced the Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit and SDK, which simplifies the process with pre-built templates, debugging tools, and integration support within Visual Studio and VS Code. Once ready, agents can be published to the Agent Store, making them easily discoverable across Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, and more.
This evolution positions Microsoft 365 Copilot as the central UI for enterprise AI, empowering organizations to embed their own intelligence directly into the tools employees use every day.
