Microsoft Introduces Scout: The First Always-On AI Autopilot for Microsoft 365

Microsoft has announced Microsoft Scout, the first Autopilot AI agent for Microsoft 365, marking a significant evolution in enterprise AI. Unlike traditional AI assistants that rely on user prompts, Scout is designed to work continuously in the background, proactively managing tasks, coordinating workflows, and keeping work moving without constant human intervention. This launch introduces a new category of Autopilot agents that can independently execute tasks while operating securely within an organization’s governance and compliance policies.

Integrated across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, Scout works seamlessly with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, calendars, emails, chats, and contacts, enabling it to understand the full context of an employee’s workday. Powered by Microsoft’s Work IQ, Scout continuously learns user preferences, priorities, and work patterns to deliver increasingly relevant support over time. It can automatically coordinate meetings across time zones, prepare meeting materials, identify upcoming deadlines, reserve focus time on calendars, and even detect stalled decisions or project risks before they impact productivity.

Security and governance remain central to Microsoft’s approach. Scout operates with its own Microsoft Entra identity, ensuring every AI-driven action is authenticated, governed, and fully auditable. The agent works within existing Microsoft Purview data protection policies, sensitivity labels, and access controls, ensuring that organizations maintain full visibility and control over how AI interacts with corporate data. Rather than bypassing security policies, Scout enforces them throughout every automated task.

Microsoft is initially rolling out Scout through a private preview for Frontier customers, allowing organizations to evaluate how autonomous AI agents can enhance collaboration, automate routine coordination, and improve workplace efficiency. Built on Microsoft’s enterprise-grade architecture and enhanced with open-source innovation, Scout represents the next step toward AI-powered digital coworkers capable of supporting employees proactively rather than simply responding to requests.

Key Insight

Microsoft Scout introduces a new era of always-on enterprise AI, shifting from reactive assistants to autonomous agents that can coordinate work, manage priorities, and proactively support employees throughout the day. As organizations continue adopting AI at scale, Scout demonstrates Microsoft’s vision for combining intelligent automation with enterprise security, governance, and compliance to deliver a more connected, productive, and AI-driven workplace.
